When the emperor penguins were filmed as part of a nature documentary on the BBC and felt trapped and unable to escape from the crack, they faced some kind of death. The film crew watching the situation faced a difficult choice. Do you intervene and help save the animals or let them die?

Somehow the penguins fell into the ravines in the middle of the storm, and many birds were with them with their young. As temperatures dropped and bird numbers increased, the team decided to take on what BBC Earth called “unprecedented movement” and dug a ladder that would allow the penguins to climb out of the canyon on their own. Their intervention in no way affected or pressured the penguins, and at the end the other filmmakers applauded.
