When you go shopping at a store like Walmart or Costco, there are staff at the entrance and exit. These staff members are called greeters and, as the name suggests, are there to greet customers, but they are there for more than just saying hello and goodbye.

When you’re done shopping and ready to leave the store, the greeter will check your receipt. They check that you got everything you paid for, but they also check that you didn’t steal anything.

Brandon Tamayo used to be a receptionist at Walmart. He shared on TikTok that he will be standing at the exit and checking receipts before customers leave the store. He had to make sure that customers don’t steal, but he revealed that he often had parents steal baby products such as diapers and formula.

In his video, he said the AP would sometimes tell him a mother is stealing and check her receipt. In these cases, he would check the receipt, but never call the mother to steal. Instead, he said something like “I’m fine” or “Have a nice day”.

The AP was never happy with Tamayo when he threw away stolen baby products, but Tamayo said he “didn’t care”. There were several reasons for this. First, he never got a reward for catching someone stealing. The Associated Press gets a bonus, but not. Second, he was making $11.50 an hour. Not enough money to care. Third, he understood that children are expensive and wanted to help parents who needed baby products so badly that they dared to steal them.

Watch Tamayo’s TikTok below to hear him describe how he allowed parents to steal baby products.

TikTok users love Tamayo’s story. Rather than blame the parents for the theft, they certainly weren’t dismayed that Tamayo would allow the theft when his job was actually to check receipts. Instead, they praise his actions. One viewer wrote: “We have to nominate you for the Nobel Peace Prize.”

Another user wrote on TikTok: “Not all heroes wear hats.”

Since Tamayo stated that he used to work at Walmart but no longer works there, a TikTok user speculated that Tamayo must have been fired for his actions. She wrote: “Maybe that’s why I got fired, but you sir are a gem. Some people fight and I’m not saying stealing is okay, but you’re an angel.”

It turns out Tamayo wasn’t fired for allowing customers to steal baby products. He hasn’t been fired at all. I left work. Tamayo explained, “She’s not divorced lol. I was the most reliable (I took shifts because I needed the money) and quit two weeks in advance when I quit. Walmart was fun.”

If your job was to check receipts at a store like Walmart, would you say something like Mom stole formula or diapers? Do you think baby food and diapers should be cheaper? Are you surprised that Tamayo wasn’t fired for letting his parents steal baby products?
